K9 StarK9 Star is a Belgian Malinois who served over 3 years for the Vail (CO) Police Department as a Narcotics Detection and Trailing dog. She was born in North Carolina in 2006 to a harsh life. Fortunately, she was rescued from an abusive owner by the amazing staff at the Humane Society of Iredell County. After getting her healthy, they put Star up for adoption but there were no takers because she was so fearful and aggressive. Thankfully, the Iredell County Humane Society works closely with the Second Chance Program run by Highland Canine in Harmony, NC. Through the dedication and talent of Highland Canine’s owner, Jason Purgason, Star was transformed from a frightened abused puppy to a confident and outstanding narcotics detection working Police K9.

After reading about Star’s story, Officer Millbern applied to Highland Canine’s Paul LeBlanc Memorial Police Dog Donation program. Officer Millbern was chosen over many other exceptional applicants and police departments across the country, making Star the first and only Police K9 in the history of Vail PD.
During her time with VPD, K9 Star had over 100 deployments, was solely responsible for over 35 narcotics specific arrests, and the seizure of over $10,000 in cash despite a lack of command staff support. She was also solely responsible for the recovery of key evidence after a home invasion and robbery. When she was not on the hunt for criminals K9 Star served as an educational ambassador for the department. She visited with over 2,500 school children across Colorado giving demonstrations of her abilities as well as helping Officer Millbern educate Colorado kids of all ages about the dangers of drugs.
Currently, K9 Star is enjoying a much deserved retirement at the Millbern household. She enjoys hiking, playing ball, sneaking onto the people bed and being generally spoiled with love and treats.
